Retail Displays

Retail displays that need to stay neat after daily handling

In shops, showrooms and pop-up spaces, display pieces get touched, moved and cleaned all day. PETG sheet suits this kind of use because it has good impact resistance, a clear finish and enough stiffness for stands, holders and merchandising parts without looking bulky. For stores in Cape Town, Durban or inland centres with dry air and dust, the surface also cleans down easily between customer rushes.

Clients usually come to us when they need pieces that look sharp on the shelf but can still handle real use. That may be a small run of risers for cosmetics, sign holders for a clothing floor, product trays for a hardware counter, or divider panels for a food display. If the layout changes often, PETG is easier to work with than many brittle sheet options and it takes well to straight cuts, panel cuts and hole marking.

  • Product risers for changing stock levels
  • Clear sign holders and menu-style display panels
  • Tray inserts and shelf organisers
  • Small stands for point-of-sale items

Typical display parts we cut for shops and showrooms

Most retail display work starts with a simple drawing or rough sketch. We can help translate that into cut pieces with the right sizes, corner details and fixing points. If the job needs cable holes, spacing for brackets or repeated dimensions across a batch, we plan those before cutting so the finished pieces fit cleanly on site.

Common parts include straight-edged panels, folded-style blanks for forming later, hole marked parts for screws or standoffs, and strip cuts for slim shelf edges or edge rails. For bigger store rollouts, small batch cutting keeps each branch consistent. For one-off product launches, a single set of cut pieces is often enough to test the display before ordering more.

  • Counter-top risers in 3 mm, 4 mm or 5 mm sheet
  • Divider panels for shelving bays and gondolas
  • Display backs for printed graphics
  • Spacer strips and stop pieces for stock positioning

Planning the layout before you order cut pieces

A display that looks good on paper can fail once it meets the counter. Check the footprint first, then work back from the actual shelf depth, product width and customer reach. In many retail spaces, 250 mm to 450 mm deep items are easier to manage than oversized stands that block sightlines. If the display will sit near a window or entrance, allow for direct sun and temperature changes, especially in coastal areas where humidity can affect adhesives and labels.

We normally advise clients to think about load bearing, movement and cleaning. A riser for fragrance testers is not the same as a rack for bottled stock. If the display will be lifted often by staff, rounded edges and deburred finishes help reduce chipping and give a neater feel in hand. For long runs, label every part so setup is quicker in store, particulary when multiple branches receive the same pack.

  • Measure shelf depth, counter space and customer reach height
  • Allow space for labels, pricing and product turnover
  • Decide whether the display must be portable or fixed
  • Check cleaning products for compatibility with the sheet surface

Common mistakes with retail display orders

One of the most common mistakes is ordering the right shape but the wrong thickness. A 2 mm sheet may suit a light sign, but a riser carrying boxed goods usually needs more body. Another issue is forgetting holes, slots or fixings until after delivery, which adds delay and extra handling. It is worth confirming every size before the cutting stage so the job does not need rework.

We also see displays fail because the finish is too polished for the environment. In a busy store with fingerprints, dust and constant wiping, clarity matters but so does easy maintenance. Film left on can help protect the sheet during handling and installation. For pieces with exposed edges, edge deburring improves safety and gives a tidier result, particularly on customer-facing counters.

  • Choosing sheet that is too thin for the load
  • Leaving out hole positions or mounting details
  • Overcomplicating a display that must be assembled quickly
  • Ignoring how often staff will move or clean the piece

Budget ranges for display work in Rand

Retail display budgets vary with sheet thickness, cut complexity and quantity. A small batch of simple risers or sign panels can be kept lean, while a larger rollout with labelled parts, hole marking and courier packing costs more. As a guide, small one-off display pieces may start from about R250 to R900 per item, depending on size and detail. Mid-range sets for a counter or shelving bay often land between R1 200 and R4 500. Larger batch orders for multiple stores can move into the R5 000 to R20 000 range once quantities and packing are included.

If you are fitting out a new store or refreshing a front-of-house area, it helps to phase the order. Start with a sample set, test it with stock and staff, then scale up. That keeps waste down and gives room to adjust heights, slots and branding before the full run. For Cape Town collection or nationwide courier work, packing and labelling should be included early so nothing is missed in transit.

How we handle cutting, packing and collection

Our Epping base supports collection for clients working across Cape Town and the northern suburbs, while filament is couriered nationwide. For sheet work, we offer straight cuts, custom sizing, strip cutting, panel cutting, hole marking, small batch cutting and large batch cutting. If the job needs protection in transit, we can leave film on where suitable, and courier packing helps reduce scratches during delivery.

Retail clients often need practical turnaround and clear part identification. We label jobs so branch teams know what goes where, and we can advise on material choice when the display needs more rigidity, more clarity or easier handling. Morne van Rensburg and the team work with clients from initial enquiry through to cut, pack and release. If you are planning a store refresh, send the measurements and use case through the enquiry form and we will help you work out the best way to make it fit.
